New Tie-Dyed Crab Found in Philippines

Once again Science proves how little we know about things that look cool, four new species of fresh water crab were found in the Philippines.  Although there are four new species the only one that everyone seems to be interested in talking about is the one that looks like it spent too much time with my wife in college and came out looking like it listened to too much Phish.  The purple creature does look like something that some art student made to mess with people, before someone mentioned the dangers of PETA and they released it to the wild.

All of this is well and good, but it turns out that when you place one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world on one of the most impoverished nations in the world most of the life does not fare well against the likes of industrialization.  Between farms needed for people to just live in the country, and their harsh chemicals, and the mining industry, which is handled so poorly in that country that everyone in the world is against it, there is less and less fresh water for these things to wander around in.  Granted, these things have been around for over a century and people are just now noticing them—it is still a rather important thing for people to study so we don’t lose arguments about how crabs evolved to creationists anymore.
