Weekly Anime Round-Up: May 20th – May 26th

Anime fans that still rely on Toonami will be pleased/infuriated to know that Sword Art Online will be gracing the Toonami lineup.  Yes, last year’s greatest train wreck is now Toonami’s problem thanks to the fact that SAO somehow became one of the most popular anime series outside of the big 3.  Ugh…  In other news, Nyarlko is finally back, and I dropped Red Data Girl because I was one of the only viewers left that hadn’t dropped Red Data Girl.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge:  Episode 8
(The Severing Crime Edge)
Rule book is kinda like the Cheshire cat, but with more strangling.

Strangely enough, Kiri and Iwai’s visit to a secret organization of murderers is much safer than anyone would have imagined…  And then Rulebook shows up, proving that he just can’t resist choking people in the name of justice.   Will Kiri live to obsess over hair cutting another day?

Date a Live:  Episode 8
Must… resist… the… dark side…

Shido has been presented with a challenge no man should ever take on under any circumstances: taking 3 girls on a date at the same time, without any of them knowing about the other dates.  This challenge is further complicated by the fact that he is going on dates with a deadly swordswoman, a mass murderer, and a highly-trained combatant.  Should anything go wrong, countless lives are at stake.  No pressure, right?

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince:  Episode 8
Will command find a way to screw up using a brand new superweapon?

The Battle of Ceres has begun, with a bit of a shaky start thanks to the higher-ups in command doing what they do best: making stupid decisions.  The ultimate result is actually the most amazing episode of MJP of all time.  Mecha fans will be treated to an orgy of space warfare in an episode that is pretty much one huge action scene.  The action is all fairly cliché, but that is to be expected at this point, and the magnificent CG used in this episode raises the bar for TV anime.

Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W:  Episode 7
(The Crawling Chaos Nyarlko-san W)
This is either an animated special on sex offenders, or Nyarlko-san is back!

Mahiro’s mom wins a pass to the local water park during a shopping spree in Monster Hunter…er… work.  This means that, for the second season in a row, it’s time for another swimsuit episode!  Come for the sexiness, stay for endless parodies and crushing loss of sanity points!

Hataraku Maou-sama!:  Episode 8
(The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
Why aren’t you eating at MgRonalds?

Sadao’s new neighbor is surprise, yet another visitor from his home world looking to keep tabs on him. Her unusual level of friendliness has Emi and Chiho watching with jealous eyes (even though Emi will never admit she is jealous.)  The real problem at hand, however, is a certain fried chicken joint with a creepy manager is stealing away business from MgRonalds right as Sadao starts his new position!

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko:  Episode 7
(The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat)
The Steel King attempts to explain her stash of siscon photos.

Another poorly thought-out wish made with the stone cat has Youto trapped inside Tsukiko’s house, alongside her sister and Azusa.  This shows unusual blend of comedy, drama, and insane levels of cuteness all come together in a really awesome way this week.  Get ready to have some truths about Tsukiko brought to light towards the end of this episode.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride:  Episode 8
It is also a good chance to squeeze in some perverse tentacles.

The deadline for the fight with the Dark Samurai is approaching, but there are rumors around the city of a murderer wandering the streets.  The murderer is some form of dark shadow spirit tentacle-thingy, and since this is an ecchi show you should all know where this is going.  This still makes more sense than Valvrave.

Kakumeiki Valvrave:  Episode 7
(Valvrave the Liberator)
Very convenient, considering there is no gravity in the room…

Ah, it’s time for everyone’s favorite train wreck of the season (perhaps of the entire year,) the show labeled by its own fan base as “so bad it’s good.”  The madness starts early this week, with a brief and seemingly unnecessary time-skip of Saki fighting the bad guys, 200 years in the future.  Things quickly return to current events, when the enemy makes a counterattack.  Get ready to rage when the audience is expected to believe that Haru is pinned down by a heavy beam- in a room with no gravity.  This scene set off a shit-storm between critics and diehard fans of the show… oh internet.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san:  Episode 8
Yes, Muromi also hates penguins.

Muromi ponders why she can’t seem to get Taku to fall for her, and this somehow causes her to swim to the Antarctic.  Here she encounters yet another fish-craving arch-nemesis, penguins.  As an added surprise, Leviathan returns!

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.:  Episode 8
(My Little Sister Can’t be this Cute 2, AKA:  Oreimo 2)
Kuroneko performed a magical class change into a holy angel warrior for her first date. C’mon “real” girls, are you even trying?

Kyousuke and Kuroneko go on their first date as a couple, and when dating an otaku, cosplay is bound to be involved.  This was a really fun, cute episode.  Then there was the last 5 seconds… we must wait until next week to see what becomes of such shocking information!

Red Data Girl:  Episode 8
Fucking dropped.

My original plan was to keep plugging away at this show to the bitter end for the sake of the article, considering I will even sit through a train wreck of a show for this piece.  However, when this episode caused me to actually fall asleep when I was planning on using that time to watch far better anime, I decided it is time for RDG to go.  Even shows that have become as silly as Valvrave still have some form of entertainment value.  RDG’s slow pacing and bland use of Japanese mysticism are the anime equivalent of Ambien, so for the rest of this season I’m going to make better use of the 23 minutes per week this show stole from me.

Shingeki no Kyojin:  Episode 8
(Attack on Titan)
A sound battle strategy.

Just when it seems everyone is screwed, a rather odd titan appears, and it seems to love killing titans.  There is some awesome fighting between humans and titans, along with some pretty badass titan vs. titan combat on the side!  The end of this episode is ultra-shocking, and now we all have to eagerly wait for next week’s episode.

Suisei no Gargantia:  Episode 8
(Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
Who wants to stay on a ship full of hippies and Hideuze sympathizers?

Gargantia’s leader has passed away, just as some of the ships and their people begin to demand to leave.  With a fresh leader in place, many now see Gargantia as an easy target for pirates and are making preparations to leave the fleet, while others are planning on using Ledo’s mecha to fight the “whalesquids” and salvage lost technology they seem to be guarding.  We are long overdue for a dose of suffering in the near future.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S:  Episode 7
(A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Kuroko… Kuroko never changes…

Misaka still seems to be pissed off about having her DNA used for a brutal experiment instead of a cure for muscular dystrophy, so she has begun her hunt for every lab involved in the experiment.  As scientists around the city try to figure out why electricity keeps blowing up all of their stuff, Misaka’s friends at Judgment are trying to figure out what she has been doing every night.  Kuroko also continues to do what Kuroko does best…

Weekly Anime Round-Up: May 13th – May 19th

There is some good news for fans of the fighting game series, Blaz Blue, as an announcement came stating that it is getting the anime treatment.  The details at the time of this article a fairly scarce, but I’ve been hearing fans of this game begging for an anime for quite some time now.  And now I have some bad news for fellow Nyarlko fans:  episode 7 is on hold until next week because of the World Table Tennis Championships.  Yes, in Japan and most of Asia, Table Tennis is serious fucking business.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge:  Episode 7
(The Severing Crime Edge)
Yuri murder is the purest form of murder.

Ah, there’s nothing like kicking off this week’s anime with another exciting episode of the anime where people with crazy fetishes do battle with one another.  This time Kiri and Iwai have been given an invitation to meet with an organization of Authors and Insteads.  As they make preparations to meet the people that will likely become their opponents in the future, a few more things are revealed about the pasts of some of the characters, and there are some bits of fanservice thrown in just for fun.

Date a Live:  Episode 7
Someone should probably look into the AST’s policy of only hiring teenage girls. Nah, nevermind.

The AST’s most skilled combatant arrives in town, and she introduces herself by delivering a serious beat down on the other AST members.  Meanwhile, a new student transfers to Shido’s school, introducing herself as a spirit.  The bad news is, not only is she telling the truth, she has the codename Nightmare, which she earned by killing 10,000 people.  And to top everything off it seems Shido is having some unusual sister troubles.  Things are going to get really interesting from here on out.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince:  Episode 7
Stupid sexy enemy of humanity…

This episode starts off by giving mankind’s enemy, the Wulgaru, some screen time.  This has introduced an unexpected level of depth to the show’s storyline, as well as a new set of characters to be fleshed out.  This is a pleasant surprise, especially since I was thinking the show was just going to keep the story in a simpler, one-sided direction.  In the meantime, the GDF has completed a new weapon and has decided to immediately move it into the largest battle they have ever organized.  Seeing as command has a reputation for making poor decisions, we will have to see how things unfold next week.

Hataraku Maou-sama!:  Episode 7
(The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
Emi’s angry expressions have somehow made her famous amongst fans.

The devil and his roommates now have a new neighbor, a young girl with very traditional Japanese attire and mannerisms.  As usual, Emi decides to do some stalking to see if she has more competition-er… to make sure her enemies aren’t up to something evil.  But on the upside of things, Sadao is getting promoted to shift manager at MgRonalds!

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko:  Episode 6
(The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat)
Get out of my anime, Anita Sarkeesian.

Youto has figured out what happened to his house, along with another cat statue that is causing more trouble.  A couple test wishes that end with lewd results proves how powerful and potentially dangerous this new statue is.  Meanwhile, Youto is also trying to find a way to avoid the wraith of a seriously pissed off Steel King, and this somehow also ends with lewd results.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride:  Episode 7
This is important for samurai training, right?

As the rest of the girls begin qi training under their new teacher, Jubei is trying to find a way to turn back to her normal form.  The typical ecchi antics go on, with a bit of Naoe’s usual troublemaking from time to time.  Unfortunately, the power of Jubei’s master samurai form has also drawn the dark samurai to the dojo…

Kakumeiki Valvrave:  Episode 6
(Valvrave the Liberator)
No, you are space vampire mecha pilots. Know the difference, Saki.

Saki isn’t satisfied with causing the school to erupt into a perfectly choreographed Idol production and stealing a kiss from Haruto.  She decides that the best way to make her comeback as an Idol is to hop into one of the newly discovered Valvrave robots hidden away in the school basement and become a space vampire.  I wasn’t even 5 minutes into this episode when I began to realize that the craziness of the story has become so out of hand that it seems more like the description of something that happened in one of the comedy anime I have been watching this season.  Things go from bad to worse when Saki’s character devolves into an edgy, reckless, manipulative mess of a person that leaps onto the battlefield to be showered with attention on the WIRED network’s twitter-like social media site.  And she does all this attention-whoring after going on a rant about how much she hates human beings.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san:  Episode 7
What do mermaids, Japanese demons, and talking snakes do for fun? They like to hang out in the woods, eat mushrooms and trip their balls off, apparently.

Once again Taku is introduced to another of Muromi’s legendary friends, this one being a genuine Kappa.  Don’t know what a Kappa is?  It is a Japanese water demon known for causing mischief, drowning pets, livestock and children, and stealing a mystical ball containing the souls of men from their butts.  Seriously, go look it up in Wikipedia.  Prepare for hilarious moments involving hallucinogenic mushrooms and cucumbers.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.:  Episode 7
(My Little Sister Can’t be this Cute 2, AKA:  Oreimo 2)
Uh oh, is best girl about to win?

Warning:  Potential Spoilers?

Just after Kyousuke lectures his sister out of dating, Kuroneko calls him out for a confession.  Now Kyousuke is left wondering if dating her is right thing to do, so he asks his friends and his sister for advice.  Sorry Kirino fans, you should have known Kyousuke wasn’t going to take the illegal route, not that I can hear your cries over the sound of best girl winning…

…And yes, I did allow spoilers for gloating.

Red Data Girl:  Episode 7
An ambush by Tengu ninjas somehow ends in disappointment.

Izumiko seems to have fallen into an ambush, yet there is little to no consequence.  The camping trip continues, with the occasional odd occurrence and little to explain why.  In case you haven’t noticed, my enthusiasm for this show has been getting fizzling out with each episode, especially since we are over half way through the show and it is up to the same trick of building up suspense for mediocre and inconsequential events.

Shingeki no Kyojin:  Episode 7
(Attack on Titan)
Oh c’mon, stop being such a negative nancy.

Mikasa finally learns Eren’s fate, and now the soldiers left behind are running low on the propellant that powers their titan-hunting gear.  There is some pretty crazy stuff that happens in this episode, and I’d be laying out some serious spoilers if I talked about it.  Don’t miss this week’s episode!

Suisei no Gargantia:  Episode 7
(Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
Time for some revenge…

Ledo is shocked to discover the Hideuze are Earth, and instantly gets to work doing what he does best: killing Hideuze.  Unfortunately the peaceniks of Gargantia know the enemy of all mankind as a sacred creature, so Ledo is scolded once again for doing something awesome.  Now the people of Gargantia are in fear of these creatures coming for revenge, as Ledo decides to leave the fleet in order to fulfill his duty of killing the Hideuze without anyone to stand in his way.  And this time it looks like Amy and her slutty friends won’t be able to convince Ledo to stop, even with sexy belly dancing.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S:  Episode 6
(A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Accelerator makes a great first impression.

After Misaka watches her clone get brutally murdered for the sake of science, she decides it is time to dispense some electromagnetic justice.  Unfortunately she is about to get a lesson on how much of a difference in power there can be even amongst a fellow level 5 esper.  And in the meantime, poor Kuroko is still waiting by the phone for a call from onee-sama…

Weekly Anime Round-Up: May 6th – May 12th

We are at the halfway mark of the spring season, and this week brings us laughter, fun, some action… and maybe even some things that are a little disturbing.  This week’s episode of Railgun is a probably the big controversy of the week, since the show has taken a very jarring change of tone that Railgun-only fans likely did not expect.  In other news, it has been announced that the first two Madoka Magica films will be coming out on Blu-ray here in the states by the end of June; which is great news for those of us not lucky enough to catch these films in a major city when they were showing.  The catch is this is an Aniplex release, meaning that it comes with wallet-crushing, Japanese-style pricing.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge:  Episode 6
(The Severing Crime Edge)
We kinda figured that out with all the dominating you have done.

Poor Iwai must fight for her life from a swarm of… zombies that only assault girls.  Don’t worry, if that concept is too unusual for you just wait until the hair cut/NTR (look it up.  It’s a thing.) scene comes around.  I’m still having fun watching this show, but the problem is I’m laughing at times I shouldn’t be.  The strangeness of this show has been creeping along the borders of cheesiness for a while, even by anime standards, but this episode really crossed the line.  While this isn’t a train wreck of Sword Art Online proportions, we certainly have a contender for this year’s “So Bad its Good” category when AOTY comes around.

Date a Live:  Episode 6
Yes, this was a battle between a light-saber wielding mecha-girl and a vegetable stand.

The spirits have decided they want Shido to take them to some hot springs for a new experience.  The problem is, the AST is also on their way to the very same location for some relaxation.  What would normally have been a typical hot-springs episode is quickly turned upside down when a tantrum over head-patting during the drive to the springs turns the city into a warzone.  This episode is full of even more of this show’s odd brand of goofiness, and that is a good thing.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince:  Episode 6
I guess even mecha pilots get burned by cute girls in High School.

Even winning the war’s first major victory isn’t enough to repair the damaged reputation of MJP as “Fail Five.”  MJP parts ways with the Dobermans to return to the academy for ridicule… and a rushed graduation to bring them into the main army.  As usual, Earth politics behind the scenes are already seeking out ways to take advantage of the technology used by team MJP’s mecha.

Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W:  Episode 6
(The Crawling Chaos Nyarlko-san W)
Sadly this won’t activate magical powers for awesome battles. I’ve tried it against my boss.

Kuuko now has to find a way to convince her cousin that she is in love with someone on Earth, and admitting she wants to hook up with Nyarlko would disgrace her family.  Her only option is to go on a pretend date with Mahiro, sending Kuuko’s cousin and Nyarlko into a rage.  After a heavy helping of the typical reference comedy expected for this show, we get a bit of a serious moment between Nyarlko and Mahiro.  How much longer can Mahiro hold onto his sanity?

Hataraku Maou-sama!:  Episode 6
(The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
Alarmist religious groups were right. The internet really IS the devil’s plaything.

After an epic battle of might and magic in the streets of Tokyo, Satan now has a new roommate, and another mouth to feed.  The devil and his minions have decided to invest in a laptop and an internet connection in order to research friendlier ways of gaining magic power.  All of this somehow leads to breaking into the local High School to search for a haunted classroom.  This was yet another amazingly hilarious episode.  Forgive the terrible reference, but I’m lovin’ it.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko:  Episode 5
(The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat)
All girls qualify for best girl status in this show… well, maybe not the Steel King.

Azusa and a couple of her friends have gone on a trip to Okinawa, but Azusa is too busy brooding near hell cell phone waiting for Youto to call.  Meanwhile, Youto has a bigger problem: even though the stone cat lost its power, something has caused his home to disappear.  Unable to contact his family because they are working outside of the Japan, Tsukiko decides to take Youto in.  Just as Youto thinks a bath at Tsukiko’s house is going to fulfill his perverse fantasies, he is quickly reminded that he is also within the territory of the Steel King…

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride:  Episode 6
We are all winners when yuri samurai combat is involved.

A win at the swimsuit competition has awarded enough money to pay off the debts of the dojo, so the girls have decided to shut down the maid café and focus on training.  Strangely enough, video from the swimsuit competition has given them a clue to fighting the dark samurai, the power of qi.  Unfortunately for Muneakira, the world’s greatest master of qi hates men.  Fortunately for us, however, that means we get some bonus yuri action.

Kakumeiki Valvrave:  Episode 5
(Valvrave the Liberator)
This is the result of a revolution led by horny teenage boys.

Now that Valvrave has cut the module free from the dyson-sphere, the craziness of a city occupied primarily by high-school students ensues.  The delicate balance of a virtual anarchy led by teenagers is quickly revealed when the power grid has a hiccup.  I was actually annoyed when the students went out of the way to find a geeky student as an “expert” to fix the power grid, all for a repair that literally was done by pushing a huge red button.  While still very entertaining, things get pretty silly in this week’s episode, right up to an unexpected and out of place idol musical that pops up out of nowhere.  While it isn’t unheard of for even the most serious of anime shows to take a break for fanservice and comedy, it felt like this episode was trying to cram in everything anime fans enjoy from every kind of show all at once.  Fortunately it seems this is more of just a fluke episode versus an actual trend for the show.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san:  Episode 6
Muromi always “keeps it real.”

Taku brings in a big catch, a rare, unemployed oarfish that lost his job during the recession.  Taku soon discovers that the woman working at the bait & tackle shop was once an undersea princess and the oarfish’s disgraced former employer.  As usual, Muromi can’t resist trash-talking the princess and more ocean madness ensues.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.:  Episode 6
(My Little Sister Can’t be this Cute 2, AKA:  Oreimo 2)
There is nothing worse than watching a friend turn into normalfag scum.

A successful year at comiket strangely turns sour when Kirino introduces her “boyfriend.”  This leads to a mess of drama, including a botched otaku meeting and a proud father reduced to pounding down shots of sake alone in his bedroom.  Can Kyousuke stop his sister from tossing aside her friends and hobbies for something as shallow and unfulfilling as a relationship?

Red Data Girl:  Episode 6
Apparently it is a bad idea to give booze to the hosts of deities.

Izumiko and her friends are going out of town for what seems to be a friendly barbeque party.  But when your classmates consist of spirits and minions of assorted deities fighting one another for power, the term “friendly” is just for show.  And just for the hell of it, someone has decided to spike the punch bowl.

Shingeki no Kyojin:  Episode 6
(Attack on Titan)
Yes Otakon, love does bloom on the battlefield.

The surviving soldiers from the wall breach continue to fight off the titans while citizens evacuate behind the next wall.  During the battle Mikasa reminisces about the brutal tale of how lost her family and met Eren for the first time.  Questions from the last week’s cliffhanger ending are still up in the air, but this was still an interesting episode.

Suisei no Gargantia:  Episode 6
(Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
Ledo makes it clear when he doesn’t want to eat something.

Ledo has been getting paid for all of the work Chamber has been doing on Gargantia, but he has no idea what to do with the money.  Ledo is also still hoping to find some work for himself instead of letting Chamber do everything the crew wants.  In the meantime, Gargantia is having a festival to celebrate a bountiful fishing season.  This somehow turns into an incredibly sexy belly-dancing scene featuring Amy and her friends that has already driven fans everywhere into a frenzy of delight.  And then there is the end of this episode… It looks like things are going to get serious again very soon.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S:  Episode 5
(A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Accelerator don’t give a fuck.

The Sisters experiment has begun and Accelerator has arrived.  This episode shocked fans around the world for having some unexpectedly violent scenes in a show better known for its cuteness, so be prepared.  For those of you in the know, sit back and watch the experiment, it’s time for science.

Weekly Anime Round-Up: April 29th – May 5th

This was yet another great week of anime.  There were quite a few pleasant surprises this week, and this season just keeps getting better and better.  Also, if anyone has noticed that my coverage of TLR: Darkness has been lagging behind by about 2 volumes now, you are right.  I’m planning to catch everything up after the final BD comes out, and I may possibly just include it in another article about ecchi shows, since the ecchi crowd is amongst our largest group of visitors here at Varms.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge:  Episode 5
(The Severing Crime Edge)
Camp is the #1 cause of awkward memories from sexual experimentation.

Kiri and Iwai set out for a school camping trip, and Kiri tests the waters to see if he has something going on with Iwai that is more than just a friendship.  Just as camp has already become a negative experience of awkward situations, it also turns out that Kiri and Iwai have gone to camp with some more perverted murderers.  Ready yourself for the random appearance of rape zombies.  Yeah, I have to admit I wish I was making that up.

Date a Live:  Episode 5
Two-timing with girls that literally become WMD’s when they are mad is a dangerous game.

I have to admit, Shido is perhaps the most badass protagonist of a harem anime.  The main character of most harem shows only has to worry about getting yelled at and/or beaten when his circle of girls become upset.  When spirits become mad at Shido, there is the potential for hundreds, possibly thousands of lives to be lost.  Shido shows he has a pair by willfully trying to “save” Hermit while also trying to stay on the good side of Tohka and avoiding the advances of his heavily-armed stalker from the AST. (If you noticed the change of spelling for Shido, it is intentional.  As of now this is the generally accepted Romanization by translators.)

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince:  Episode 5
It does take serious guts to ask girls to come to your room to watch porn.

The MJP has begun training alongside of an elite team named the Dobermans.  After a bit of team “bonding” ends with hilarious results, MJP is sent out on a joint mission with the Dobermans.  As usual, the intel for this “easy” mission is a bit off…

Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W:  Episode 5
(The Crawling Chaos Nyarlko-san W)
I have no idea why Mahiro has not lost all of his SAN points to her yet.

Mahiro finally puts his foot down and demands that his house guests/abominations finally set up their own bedrooms using the odd dimensional-pocket creating device Nyarlko ordered from… space.  After taking a look into the disturbing living spaces of his outer god companions, Mahiro is greeted by yet another madness-inducing visitor: Kuuko’s obsessive lesbian cousin.  And with that even more sides are added to the screwed up love-triangle of this show, forming some sort of disturbing love-polygon.

Hataraku Maou-sama!:  Episode 5
(The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
Japan really needs to do something about that high cost of living…

Lucifer and a rogue high-priest have come to Earth, and they have discovered a way to regain their magic.  A completely unexpected and very awesome battle of supernatural powers erupts in the middle of the city, and yet the show is somehow able to maintain its own formula of comedic charm at the same time.  This episode reminded me of an anime version of Dogma, minus the pot-smoking antics of Jay and Silent Bob.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko:  Episode 4
(The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat)
Tsukiko’s moe factor is the #1 cause of heart attacks among anime fans.

Youto continues to try and find a way to get Tsukiko’s expressions back from the stone cat, but things get complicated when he discovers her sister is his deadliest enemy: the Steel King.  I nearly died of laughter at the end of this episode when the “Steel King” explains her rude behavior towards her sister.  As usual, you should also prepare to have your heart destroyed by maximum moe levels, this time mixed with a couple tidbits of fanservice for good measure.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride:  Episode 5
Swimsuits are an important part of the samurai dress code.

The girls have decided to take a break from fighting sexy mystical warriors and running a maid café to partake in another time-honored samurai tradition: a swimsuit competition!  This episode comes with everything there is to expect from a typical swimsuit episode within an ecchi show, so if you expecting some serious samurai action… wait, why are you watching this if you expected serious samurai action?

Kakumeiki Valvrave:  Episode 4
(Valvrave the Liberator)
Valvrave takes the prize for the coolest mecha design of this season.

Just as everyone thinks they are safe, the students quickly learn one of life’s universal truths:  politicians are lying assholes.  Luckily they have a friend with a really sweet mecha that doesn’t seem to give a shit about politics.  Oh, and L-Elf is trying to get help with some sort of rebellion.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san:  Episode 5
Stay classy, Muromi.

As Muromi loses her cool with Fuji for being the bustiest amongst her circle of mermaid friends, Fuji tries to convince Muromi to stop going on land because it tears apart her tail.  In the end all they do is demonstrate that they are both crazy, and that perhaps it is a bad idea for mermaids to drink all the time.  Meanwhile, poor Takurou finds himself having to dodge awkward questions about boobs and having fun on land in hopes of staying out of the insane arguments between alcoholic mermaids.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.:  Episode 5
(My Little Sister Can’t be this Cute 2, AKA:  Oreimo 2)
The only response to this statement is run away. As fast as you can.

A modeling scout is trying to get Kirino to go overseas again, even though she can’t bear to leave behind her otaku lifestyle again.  Now Kirino has to blow off her boss in a way that will still allow her to get other jobs in order to pay for her eroge gaming habit.  Somehow this involves making her brother pretend to be her boyfriend.  And of course, no anime about otaku life would be complete without a visit to Comiket…

Red Data Girl:  Episode 5
Watching this dude get slapped like a bitch over and over again was really funny, even though I don’t think it was supposed to be.

With a bit of help, Izumiko takes care of another group of malign deities trying to toy with her.  There is some more stuff revealed about Izumiko’s power and the consequences of unleashing it this week.  This is by far the slowest of all the shows in the round-up, but I have been told by viewers of the webcast that there is a big payoff for sticking with this show.  (There is an offical web stream of this show that is a few weeks ahead of the TV broadcast, but it is a low-res stream, so I am only covering the TV version.)

Shingeki no Kyojin:  Episode 5
(Attack on Titan)
Titan Richard Stallman wants to know why you aren’t using free and open software.

Eren and his friends have just started their new jobs in the military, but the behemoth titan has returned to make for a rough first day.  This episode opens right up with a brief but very awesome fight between Eren and the behemoth.  Prepare for suffering.

Suisei no Gargantia:  Episode 5
(Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
Betting is now open for which girl will win.

I have to admit, I did not see this show doing a swimsuit episode, and yet here we are.  As Ledo ponders taking on a career that does not involve killing, the Gargantia fleet stops for maintenance.  During this time most of the crew enjoys some R&R, and an excuse to see Amy and her friends in bikinis.  Regardless of how you may feel about this type of episode popping up in a show like this, this week’s bikini-clad romp still made for an enjoyable episode with some bits of comedy here and there.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S:  Episode 4
(A Certain Scientific Railgun)
This is the moment where I realized how lame I am when I discovered Uiharu and I share the same dream.

Misaka and her friends have decided to go out for a day of shopping in Academy city.  Meanwhile, science is hard at work, secretly pumping out Misaka clones… for science.  This episode is Railgun’s trademark mix of cute girls doing cute things and evil scientists doing science things.  Gee, I wonder what someone could possibly want with all of those Misaka clones…

Weekly Anime Round-Up: April 22nd – April 28th

Things are moving along nicely in the fourth week of this very awesome spring anime season.  I have an awesome addition to the round up this week, as the Japanese BD of Evangelion 3.33 has been around for about a week.  The official US release is still a couple months away, but never forget, when it comes to anime, when there is a will there is a way…

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge:  Episode 4
(The Severing Crime Edge)
The worst cop ever?

Things have been quiet for a couple months thanks to Kiri’s first victory.  As Kiri and Iwai enjoy the peace, trouble is still brewing.  After all, who can resist getting all their wishes granted for the simple task of murdering a little girl?  This week Kiri also runs into another Author, a twisted judge, and his “Instead”, an inept policewoman.  Oh, and a really nice couple that runs a tiny café…

Date a Live:  Episode 4
Your little sister will never be this cool.

Shidou has captured the heart of a spirit, effectively sealing her power away.  Just as it seems things are safe, Shidou has to deal with the jealously of his new spirit girlfriend and a certain sexy mecha girl.  And now another spirit shows up, because things just can’t be that easy.

Evangelion 3.33:  You Can (NOT) Redo
Pirate Asuka>>>>>>Asuka

Fans around the world have already figured out how to watch this film one way or another, and with that there is both joy and controversy.  I’m going to do my best to avoid spoiling things, but this movie is crazy enough that nearly everything is a surprise to some extent.  Anyone who has seen the first two films should have noticed by the end of the second film that this series is taking a departure from the original storyline laid out by the TV series.  The third film takes off from that radical departure, which has some fans in a bit of an uproar since Evangelion is perhaps one of anime’s most cherished franchises.

That being said, this movie is still “Evangelion”, with much of the universe and it’s “feel” still intact, but nonetheless this is still a very different story.  With all that out of the way, I can say that this was a really great movie.  The story opens up lots of interesting possibilities and sets the stage for the final movie.  As expected of theatrical anime, the art and animation are nothing short of superb.  I really can’t stress enough how incredible the visuals of this film are, as there are some “sets” that are simply amazing to look at for their sheer awesomeness in design.  I had a great time watching this, and the preview for the fourth and final film has left me dying to see more.  This is a must see for fans of Evangelion, regardless if you think you will love it or hate it.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince:  Episode 4
I would give all of my money to her to fix my car.

Thanks to a grand screw-up from a douchebag in command, a “simple” mission against a supply route turns into an encounter with elite forces.  This week we learn a little more about the origins of the MJP team, along with the results of this dangerous encounter.  It looks like we may have an inevitable training story arc ahead of us.

Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W:  Episode 4
(The Crawling Chaos Nyarlko-san W)
This was all part of Nyarlko’s plan to bang Mahiro…

Now that peace is once again restored to the universe, Nyarlko is back to her usual task of trying to get some from Mahiro.  Poor Nyarlko is out of luck though, especially now that Mahiro has discovered a place to buy cheap forks.  And thus the sanity-depleting fun continues.

Hataraku Maou-sama!:  Episode 4
(The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
Satan is now a hero. Checkmate, Christians.

After an both the “hero” and an earthquake come to cock-block Maou from getting himself some top-tier coworker lovin’, the most loveable dark lord of all time uses his powers to save people trapped in the rubble.  Emi finds herself shocked to see that the person she fought so hard to destroy has suddenly turned a new leaf.  There also seems to be some more visitors from the realm of magic on the way…

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko:  Episode 3
(The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat)
Everyone loves that stony cat!

As Youto and Azusa patch things up and make good with the cat god, poor Tsukiko is still stuck being unable to show her emotions.  Tsukiko has discovered that her inability to show emotion has hindered one of her favorite activites, and turns to Youto for help.  Being light-hearted, fun, and incredibly cute is the formula of this show, and it is terrifyingly effective.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride:  Episode 4
As soon as the concept of marriage is introduced the girls INSTANTLY go insane.

The evil and incredibly lewd Gisen has returned, claiming loyalty now that her real master cannot return for hundreds of years from now.  Just as the girls are ready to toss Gisen out to avoid even more competition, Gisen mentions a rumor that becoming a samurai bride to a general yields even more power to a master samurai.  The catch is, only one master samurai can become a samurai bride.  And so the harem turns to the game of “which girl will win.”  Also, there are boobs.  Have fun!

Kakumeiki Valvrave:  Episode 3
(Valvrave the Liberator)
Say, do you mind if I harvest your blood and steal your body?

Haruto has become a hero to his classmates and his nation, and social networks all over the Dyson Sphere have been singing his praises.  Meanwhile, everyone in military prison gets an important lesson:  L-Elf is nothing to fuck with.  Once again, Valvrave delivers even more action.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san:  Episode 4
And so we learn a lesson about the ecosystem and yetis, harpies, and mermaids.

Muromi invites yet another old friend, this time a yeti from the Himalayas.  The usual antics ensue, made worse by the appearance of a harpy that is loathed by Muromi since she hates birds.  There are important lessons about the food chain of mythical beasts.  Take notes.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.:  Episode 4
(My Little Sister Can’t be this Cute 2, AKA:  Oreimo 2)
I love classy otaku entertainment.

Kirino invites her rival from America to stay in her home, in hopes of beating her in another race.  When the petite Ria arrives and starts getting clingy with Kyousuke, Kirino immediately berates her brother for being a lolicon, then drags both of them back out into Akihabara.  I hope none of you are offended by a bit of shimapan…

Red Data Girl:  Episode 4
This is what old people think the internet can do.

Suzuhara quickly finds out that her new school is just as, if not even more so, dangerous than her old one.  It isn’t long before Suzuhara notices dark shadows coming for her, and more supernatural craziness ensues.  The pacing is really picking up, and I think things are going to get really interesting very soon.

Shingeki no Kyojin:  Episode 4
(Attack on Titan)
Sasha is quickly working her way up as best girl.

Now that training is finally over, Eren and company have high enough scores to choose a comfortable life behind the center wall, or a chance for revenge.  By this point I think we all know what Eren will do.  The next episode is going to be awesome, or devastating, or both.  On a side note, the opening theme song from this show has started a meme over in Japan.  Just like the “Guile’s theme goes with everything” meme, the same has been done with the opening to Attack on Titan.  Check YouTube and Niconico for the AoT theme being played alongside everything from Madoka Magica and K-ON to ramen noodles being cooked and Snuggle fabric softener ads.  Trust me, its loads of fun.

Suisei no Gargantia:  Episode 4
(Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
Ledo discovers Earth girls ARE easy.

Ledo has proven himself enough to earn the right to stay on Gargantia, but not without first getting a bill for breaking a hangar roof in the first episode.  This episode is focused on world building, but the interesting twist is the audience learns about both Gargantia and the Galactic Alliance that Ledo has come from.  I would also like to point out that Amy’s friends are hot.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S:  Episode 3
(A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Without Misaka around, poor Kuroko is reduced to dry-humping her stuffed animals.

Fans of Index should already have realized that this season of Railgun takes place during the “Sisters” arc, told from Misaka’s perspective.  What is really cool about this is that many for the little gaps in the Sisters arc are filled by this story.  I really wish I could see the faces of Railgun-only fans when Accelerator shows up.
