Weekly Anime Round-Up: April 30th-May 6th

Week 5 of the spring anime season has come to pass, and this week a new show was picked up.  AKB0048 has joined the watch list, if anything for its unusual concept. (What else is new this season?)  Let’s get down to business and see what happened last week…

Accel World:  Episode 5

This week Haru finds himself face to face with his old friend Takumu, AKA “Cyan Pile.”  This entire episode surrounds the fight between Silver Crow and Cyan Pile, with a few surprises here and there.  On an interesting side note, it’s interesting to see all the buzz on forums of people that are angry that short, pudgy Haru has gained the affection of Kuroyukihime.  Haters gonna hate.

Picked Up:
AKB0048  Episode 1

The popular Japanese Idol group, AKB48, is now part of a sci-fi anime series about outlaw idol singers.

After Earth lies in ruin from a massive war during the early 21st century, mankind has colonized new worlds.  Unfortunately some of these worlds are led by oppressive regimes that place heavy restrictions on entertainment.  A rebellious idol group known as AKB0048 is mankind’s last hope in… escaping boredom.  The silly concept of this show gets even better when a “guerrilla” idol concert erupts into a battle between mecha and shock troops with lightsabers.  I picked this up just to see the ridiculous spectacle, but it was actually very fun to watch.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-San:  Episode 4

Japan’s goofy take on Cthulu Mythos carries on in yet another crazy episode.  This week viewers finally get to see the origin of Mahiro’s fork-wielding when his monster-hunting mother returns home from work.  This week yet another alien joins the crew, a small boy named Hastur, however his powers have yet to be revealed.  Looks like we will have to wait until next week to see if Hastur can tear up monstrosities as well as Nyaruko and Kuuko.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?  OF THE DEAD:  Episode 5
(Is This a Zombie?  2nd season)

When Sera leaves the house for “vampire-ninja” business, Haruna is put in charge of holding up the fort, even though it’s Ayumu’s house.  A lazy day around the house of chores and eating tangerines is shaken up by Eu falling ill.  Get ready for some good laughs when Ayumu seeks out advice on how to take care of an ill denizen of the underworld.

Natsuiro Kiseki:  Episode 5
(A Summer-Colored Miracle)

This week’s episode surrounds Yuka and Rinko.  Rinko catches a cold from wandering in the summer rain, so Yuka stay’s by her side.  Things get strange when it’s revealed that Rinko hallucinates and sees a whale whenever she has a fever, and it turns out these visions surround the events that brought the 4 girls together as friends when they were younger.  This week’s episode was one of the weaker runs of this show, especially since it was lacking the “silly wish of the week.”

Sankarea:  Episode 5

This time Chihiro finds himself trying to find a way to keep Rea’s body from rotting away, as well as dealing with her rigor mortis.  As Chihiro discover’s his senile grandfather may have invented the zombie potion, poor Wanko winds up in a rather unusual situation.  Prepare yourself for the last few minutes of this episode when the most unusual zombie attack of all time happens…

Upotte!!:  Episode 5

The assault rifle tournament is in full swing this week, making this one of the most action-packed episodes of the show so far.  Get ready to see M-16 show off her stuff as she faces two opponents by herself while suffering from a rifle malfunction.  Even more “shock and awe” comes up later on during a disturbing battle between FNC and the batshit-crazy Sako.

Weekly Anime Round-Up: April 23rd-29th

Week 4 of the spring anime season has come and gone, and what a week it was.  This season is proving to be one of the best in a long time, with most shows leaving me begging for more.  Here is this week’s round up of anime goodness.

Accel World: Episode 4

Haru’s steamy wired connection with Chiyuri reveals that someone has infected her neuro-linker with a virus to hunt down Kuroyukihime on the school network.  While Haru tries to explain what he discovered to Kuroyukihime, he quickly becomes witness to the consequences of her reputation as the “Black Lotus”.  There isn’t much more I can talk about from this episode without spoiling it, but if you’re watching this you had best prepare yourself for an emotional roller-coaster.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-San: Episode 3

This insane show continues its non-stop assault of parody, comedy, and fanservice.  This week Kuuko has followed Nyaruko to Earth, and has decided to team up with her to fight the alien crime syndicate…  only so she can get closer to Nyaruko.  It almost seems like the show is going to take a more serious direction when a “villain” appears, but instead the goofball antics continue with yet another hilarious battle scene.

(Correction:  Last week I misspelled Cthuga’s nickname as Kuko, but it would seem “Kuuko” is the generally accepted spelling of her name.)

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?  OF THE DEAD: Episode 4
(Is This a Zombie?  2nd season)

Ayumu continues to wallow in despair since his secret identity as a magiclad girl has been revealed.  This time his friend convinces him to visit a nearby maid cafe to get his mind off of everything that has been going on.  Unfortunately, this maid cafe is operated by a certain clan of vampire ninjas…

Natsuiro Kiseki: Episode 4
(A Summer-Colored Miracle)

Another week, another accidental rock wish.  Saying the wrong thing around the wishing rock causes a mess of body swapping among the girls.  Things get interesting when Yuka swaps bodies with Saki and decides to take Saki’s body for a test drive and date a boy she has a crush on.  This show isn’t nearly as exciting or spectacular as the others out this season, but it continues to deliver its simple charms.

Sankarea: Episode 4

Poor Rea did not survive the fall at the end of last week’s episode, but lucky for her, Chihiro’s potion still seems to work.  Rea is strangely delighted by her transformation, since she is now free from her twisted father, and Chihiro struggles to contain his urges now that his zombie “fetish” has been fulfilled.  Between Chihiro harboring two zombies and Rea’s enraged father swearing revenge, things are about to become very interesting.

Upotte!!! Episode 4

The world’s cutest show about guns doles out lessons on the M-16, the AK-47 and its derivatives, and NATO ammunition.  M-16 talks about her embarrassing defeat during the Vietnam War, as she prepares for a school-hosted battle tournament.  Tempers flare when “bad girls” Galil AR and SAKO RK95 stir up trouble with the other students.  This week’s episode ends right when the action heats up, but that only means more to look forward to for this coming week.

Weekly Anime Round-Up: April 16th-22nd

Week 3 of the 2012 spring anime season has come and gone, and it has been a good week.  Nearly all of the shows have laid down the groundwork for things to come, so some exciting times are up ahead.  This week also has another casualty, yet another show dropped from the watch list.

Accel World: Episode 3

Haru continues to learn more about the game world of Brain Burst in this episode, as well as the dark history behind the girl who got him involved in all this to begin with.  While this episode was slow, learning about the Brain Burst game world and its territories was interesting.  As an added bonus, get ready for things to get hot and heavy when Haru convinces his childhood friend Chiyuri to perform a wired connection with him using a very short cable…

Haiyore! Nyaruko-San: Episode 2

Things only get crazier in the second episode as Nyaruko has to face one of her most dreaded enemies- Cthuga.  This episode is jam packed with references on everything from Gundam to Kamen Rider.  The fast-paced silliness of this show delivers almost nonstop laughter, and I find that this show seems to bring a smile to my face no matter how bad of a mood I may be in.  Be sure to brace yourself when Cthuga (AKA “Kuko”) tells Nyaruko what her true intentions are.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?  OF THE DEAD: Episode 3
(Is This a Zombie?  2nd season)

Zombie has some tough competition for the comedy category this season because of Nyaruko, but this show still delivers the laughs.  I never thought I would find myself laughing about chainsaw repair as much as I have in this episode.  Things get even better when Maelstrom takes up dancing and is joined by Haruna.  This episode also ended with more “teasers” of actual story events to come.

Medaka Box: Episode 3

The second episode of this show really left a bad taste in my mouth, and I have to admit, I only watched this week’s episode solely on the street cred of Gainax.  Unfortunately, I find that I cannot get into this show, and even worse, it does not seem like this show is going to go anywhere beyond the story of solving mundane problems every week.  Perhaps I went into this with expectations that are too high due to all of the hype at the beginning of the season, but either way, I am done with this show unless I hear it is getting good.

Natsuiro Kiseki: Episode 3
(A Summer-Colored Miracle)

The magical rock hijinks continue as the girls find out that a little boy saw them flying in the air.  After deciding it’s important to keep the stone a secret, the girls try to find a way keep the boy and his friends quiet about their magic flight.  While this episode was not nearly as amusing as last weeks, it was still entertaining enough to keep me watching.

Sankarea: Episode 3

As Rea deals with her abusive father, Chihiro and his cousin Ranko (or “Wanko” as he calls her) go searching for zombie Babu.  This show seems to mix drama and bits of comedy together in an interesting way, and I am finding myself being drawn further into this with every episode.  Once again, this episode ended on a cliffhanger (literally) that has me excited for next week.

Upotte!!! Episode 3

This week’s episode kicks off with a demonstration about the importance of keeping rifles clean and well oiled, anime style.  The show also introduces the “SMG class,” as well as a detailed explanation of why British guns kinda suck.  Three episodes into this, it’s hard to believe that a show about firearms, the history behind them, and fanservice somehow works, but it’s devilishly entertaining for some reason.

Weekly Anime Round-Up: April 9th-15th

The second week continues the spring 2012 anime season, with one new show added to my watch list and the first casualty.  A few shows have begun to surprise me in ways I did not Imagine, where a couple others have already begun to show their flaws.  Time to see what’s hot and what’s not for this week…

Accel World 2

This episode picks up right where the last on left off, with Haru being forced into a fight in a strange virtual world.  This episode is focused on explaining more about the “Brain Burst” program and the acceleration powers it offers, as well as showcasing Haru’s first real fight.  While nothing too spectacular happened this week, the stage is being set for very interesting fights and situations.

Picked Up:
Haiyore! Nyaruko-San

Just when you thought Upotte! was the most unusual case of turning random things into moe schoolgirls, Nyaruko-san steps up with something even crazier.  This time, H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulu Mythos is given a moe makeover.  The episode opens with a boy named Mahiro being attacked by a terrible looking monster, until he is saved by a powerful, yet cute girl named Nyaruko, whom introduces herself as the “crawling chaos.”  Nyaruko claims that she is Nyarlathotep, taking the form of a human girl to preserve the sanity of those who see her.

Nyaruko then explains beings like herself and other creatures of Cthulu mysthos are aliens, and that she has been sent to stop an evil organization of them that has appeared on earth.  The show is not to be taken seriously by any measure, and runs wild with its goofy premise.  Many fans have stated this is the best show of the season, and while it may be too soon to make that claim, so far this has been one of the most fun and entertaining shows right out of the gates.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?  OF THE DEAD 2
(Is This a Zombie?  2nd season)

This week’s episode of Zombie starts off with Ayumu dealing the social and legal consequences of his “public” transformation into a magical girl.  This episode delivers even more laughs as Ayumu finds his embarrassing transformation plastered all over the internet, and the fun continues as the gang decides to go on a hiking trip so Ayumu can relax for a bit, as unlikely as that will be.  This week’s episode ended with a taste of things to come, as the evil masou-shoujo (magiclad) Kyoko makes her return.

Medaka Box 2

Medaka Box had a massive plunge in popularity this week, and this episode is an example of why.  This week Medaka spends her time uncovering shoe vandals and looking for lost dogs.  I’m not kidding, that’s what they did this week.  Many fans, myself included, are becoming disappointed by this show’s boring pace and poor animation quality, something that is unacceptable from a studio like Gainax.  Things could turn around dramatically for this show, but if nothing happens soon this show is likely to get dropped off my watch list.

Natsuiro Kiseki 2
(A Summer-Colored Miracle)

Magical rock wishing girls continues, with an episode that is much more fun than I had expected.  As Natsumi and Saki continue fighting even after the miracle they witness, Yuka and Rinko accidentally make a wish that forces the fighting girls to become “stuck” to each other.  The silliness of the situation and how they handle it made this episode surprisingly funny.  Another thing I have noticed about this show is the painstaking amount of detail in the scenery, and the vibrant colors used to bring it all to life.  I’m not always crazy about slice of life type shows, but for now I’m certainly going to keep watching this one.

Nazo no Kanojo X 2
(Mysterious Girlfriend X)

This show takes the cake for being the strangest one of the bunch, and that’s saying a lot since it’s in a season with shows about monsters from Cthulu lore and assault rifles turned into cute girls.  This episode features Akira moping about because he is finding his relationship with Mikoto is at a dull standstill, the only constant being the daily ritual of eating Mikoto’s drool.  Things get weirder as the episode moves along and some of the more unusual side effects of Mikoto’s drool are revealed.  While I always try to be as open-minded as possible about anime, this was just too much for me to handle.

Sankarea 2

Chihiro’s attempts to revive his dead cat continue in this episode, but things get very dramatic as Rea’s tragic background is revealed.  It turns out there is a rather disturbing relationship between Rea and her father, bringing a rather unexpected, dark turn for a show that comes off as a typical romance comedy.  This episode had a cliffhanger ending that has me eager to see what happens next week.

The most adorable show about firearms starts off with what seems like a documentary on the performance of different models of assault rifles, presented in a way only anime can.  Things get intense later in the episode when the assault rifle girls are challenged to a gunfight by the senior battle rifle girls.  While there is no “body count” (they are just supposed to pop balloons above each other’s heads, which is also something you should never do with real guns, EVER[this announcement brought to you by Varms.Net]) the gunfight between these two classes was a fairly exciting and action-packed affair.  For some Upotte! related bonus fun, check out some forum threads about this show, where you can see the funny yet disturbing trend of anime fans turning into gun enthusiasts.
